about

The Maryland Sports Business Conference was created in 2020 by two undergraduate students in the Sports Business Society at the University of Maryland. Bradley Polkowitz and Rachel Levitt sought to increase awareness around sports business and educate students about the vast possibilities within this career field. They strive to foster a diverse and inclusive sports community, and connect their students with sports business professionals and organizations.

The 4th Annual Maryland Sports Business Conference will empower students to be innovative, be ambitious, and be fearless. The conference will feature a variety of speakers and sponsors representing various sectors of the sports industry. This is a great way to hear from the best in the industry and learn more about different career opportunities.

A Word From Our Founders

“When I arrived at the University of Maryland in the Fall of 2018, I was in love with every aspect of the school, except there was always one part missing, which I couldn’t figure out. In my second semester, I learned about the UMD Sports Business Society and at the first meeting Laura Humphreys talked about her experience as a Senior Manager of Marketing & Activation at the Baltimore Ravens. Listening to her speak, I found my untapped passion for the intersection between sports, business, and connecting with my community. Leaving that meeting, I knew I had to figure out a way to unleash that potential on campus.

Creating the Maryland Sports Business Conference was an idea that came naturally to Bradley and me. We were two students with a shared vision and desire to make an impact on our campus by getting involved in the nearby booming sports market. Although there were bumps along the way, our dream never wavered. The immediate impact and positive feedback of our work made everything worth it to keep going. The Maryland Sports Business Conference has since created a networking and relationship-strengthening vehicle that connects students with alumni, sports executives, athletes, and their respective organizations.

From what was just an idea to the creation of a successful conference with Bradley, to now being Alumnus and being able to see the conference flourish under the next generation of leaders, it is incredible to see its everlasting impression on UMD. The Maryland Sports Business Conference has become an epicenter for students all around the UMD and greater DMV area to follow their passions, connect with alumni, and create opportunities for their dream internship or job. Just as I realized my spark in sports business, I am confident the Maryland Sports Business Conference will be somebody’s “Laura.”

Rachel Levitt

MSBC Co-Founder

“Co-founding the Maryland Sports Business Conference alongside Rachel will always be one of my proudest accomplishments from my time at the University of Maryland. Coming into college, I was still very unsure about what I wanted to do, but I was always fascinated by sports and business. During the first look fair, I saw the UMD Sports Business Society and quickly got involved, attended every meeting, and became the President by the end of my freshman year. This opportunity allowed me to progress my career and network with hundreds of alumni and professionals. Most importantly though, I had the opportunity to inspire the next generation of sports business leaders and make an impact on campus.

Being in one of the largest media markets, Rachel and I saw a massive opportunity for students to network with UMD alumni and the neighboring professionals in the industry. This led us to host the first Maryland Sports Business Conference virtually in 2021 and the feedback from attendees inspired us to continue to grow the annual event. Every year, our team strived to bring in the most influential leaders, discuss the hottest topics in sports, and provide opportunities for students to progress their careers.

As an alumnus, I am excited to attend the conference every year to see how the next generation of leaders build on the blueprint that Rachel and I have laid out. It brings me tremendous joy hearing the success stories of students that have reached their dream jobs and seeing the impact we have made at UMD.”

Testimonials

“I attended SBC because I wanted to network with people in the sports world that I otherwise would not have been able to interact with! Tim Kurkjan and Brandon Steiner were really cool to listen to as I am a huge baseball fan. I read about them and listen to their opinions all the time, so getting to connect in a closer network was a cool experience! SBC is a great experience for people interested in working in the sports industry. Getting to listen and talk to professionals in all different aspects of the sports world helps grow your own network and learn new ways to expand your own experience.”

“The SBS conference changed the way I looked at sports for good. I have always had a passion of playing and watching sports but I fell in love with being part of the business side as well. The guest speakers not only taught us that meant being a part of marketing, sports betting, eSports, and journalism but how race and gender intersect with it also. I was able to make a lot of good connections there which led me to getting my Baltimore Ravens Marketing Event Staff internship.”

“Trying to get into the sports industry can be really intimidating, but the Maryland Sports Business Conference made the industry feel welcoming and accessible. I’m so thankful that Maryland has such an amazing conference where students can learn about the industry and network with professionals from so many different organizations. I learned so much and met so many people with the same goals as me which shows how great of a community I have around me. I urge everyone interested in the sports industry to come to the conference!”

“Last year’s SBC was an amazing experience. It gave me the opportunity to listen to various industry professionals talk about their career paths and the sports industry as a whole. The SBC also gave me a lot of great opportunities to network with very notable industry professionals that I wouldn’t have been able to speak to otherwise. These interactions provided a good deal of insight and allowed me to expand my network. On top of that, many people like myself have never had the chance to get a professional headshot, and last year’s SBC allowed me to get a great photo in front of SECU Stadium! Overall, the SBC is a great experience for students who are looking to get involved with the business side of sports because of the valuable insight and networking opportunities that can’t be understated.”

From this, I was able to explore new topics and approaches to professional growth in sports. Overall, the 2023 SBC was worth every second, and I cannot wait for the next one!”
